'Sesame Street' games to cover Wii Remote buttons

LOS ANGELES — T is for too many buttons.

The first-ever Wii video games based on the venerable “Sesame Street” franchise will come packaged with an unprecedented doodad: a cover that hides buttons on the Wii Remote. the games’ producers insist the plush covers, which will look like either Elmo or Cookie Monster, will make the Nintendo controller less confusing for younger players.

“This is the first time anything like this has been developed and licensed for Nintendo,” said Scott Chambers, Sesame Workshop senior vice president of media distribution. “We will be the first to introduce such an aid. We’re doing it so that preschoolers can play and learn from these ‘Sesame Street’ games without feeling frustrated with the controller.”

Chambers said the soft, fuzzy “gameplay helpers” for “Elmo’s A-to-Zoo Adventure” and “Cookie’s Counting Carnival,” both slated to be simultaneously released this fall, will cover about 80 percent of the controller and won’t cost extra. the pair of games mark the first time “Sesame Street” characters have starred in titles for the Wii and Nintendo DS systems.

The handheld versions of the games will come with a larger stylus designed for smaller hands that aims to simplify interaction with the Nintendo DS’ touch screen. Chambers said the new pair of “Sesame Street” games, which will also be available for the PC, have been designed so that 3-to-5-year-olds can play with minimal involvement from parents.

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment signed a deal with Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization which produces “Sesame Street” in over 140 countries, to create and publish a series of games for various platforms based on the 40-year-old children’s series starring big Bird, Elmo, Grover and all their neighborhood pals.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is the division of Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros. responsible for publishing games based on such franchises as Looney Tunes and DC Comics, as well as movies like “Where the Wild Things Are” and “Terminator Salvation.” They have also released original games, such as last year’s “Scribblenauts” for the Nintendo DS.

    Wii sales lagging in Japan

Despite Super Mario Galaxy 2 having a successful launch, with 340,000 copies sold in its launch week, Wii hardware sales remained minimal. There was a small sales raise when compared to last week’s sales data, but it still wasn’t enough to dethrone Sony’s platforms.

The hardware charts from Media Create are as follows:

    1. PSP: 25,054 (22,462)

    2. PS3: 20,987 (19,075)

New Inflatable Wii Kart Helps Kids, Fills Rooms

It seems that almost all peripherals for the Wii tend to range from bad to ridiculous, and CTA has released possibly the most ridiculous and peripheral for racing on the Wii yet. it seems CTA has released an inflatable, kart-shaped chair with a steering wheel attachment to put the Wii remote into.

Of course will all these plastic peripherals filling the room, having a massive plastic kart in the room may not be a step in the right direction. though the peripheral is set at only $40 for the inflatable kart, it’s a reasonable price for something so huge. Not to mention proceeds from the kart go to Kids are Heroes, a charity that’s goal is to inspire youth to do “amazing things”.

For those out there who feel there’s a cold spot on the living room floor, go for it. At least this peripheral is doing something for others. Personally, it just won’t fit around all those plastic guitars and drum sets.

Nintendo brings back retro fun with 'Runner'

Summer gaming is starting with a bang. So many top-tier games are being released right now that there will be no shortage of titles to play when the school year ends in June. until then, I suggest trying a fun game that’s the perfect, quick study break for kids focused on doing well at the end of the semester.

Parents of Wii-owning students, encourage your child to play games that won’t consume hours at a time. “Bit. Trip Runner” is a great diversion until kids can have the time to soak in “Super Mario Galaxy 2.” And for grownups who had an Atari, this game will bring back fond memories.

As a download-only title, “Runner” does not catch your eye unless retro-styled, chunky, pixelated graphics are your thing. The premise is pure Mario: you move from the left to the right and jump when things get in your way. “Runner” also gets the retro gaming feeling right in its style, responsiveness and its thumb-punishing level of difficulty that will test any new gamer’s patience. if you grew up playing console games with no checkpoints, “easy” difficulty settings and cheats, “Runner” will win you over.

Unlike Mario, you are not in control of your speed. your character, the stylishly blocky Commander Video, will run to the beat of the music and you have to jump, slide, kick or block your way around colorful obstacles to get to the finish line. this game needs to be studied and memorized since the patterns never change. One false move and it’s back to the beginning of the level.

Once you hit an object, you won’t die. Restarting the level is instantaneous as you are zoomed backward at high speeds until you reach the starting line. this isn’t a game about making it on the first try, it’s about learning each level and perfecting the sequence of moves. The difficulty can be punishing, but if you can keep your composure and make safe jumps and easy grabs for the gold strewn about each level, you will find yourself amazed at the fantastic visuals and music.

My only complaint is that the later levels are locked until you get past the previous stage. There are times when I got stuck and almost left the game. Luckily, I persevered to get a little further and the accomplishment felt great.

Difficulty aside, this game is fantastic. There will be some controller-throwing frustration, but the reality is that “Runner” can be finished with enough practice and patience. even if you never see the later levels, jumping through an homage to Activision’s “Pitfall” will put a smile on your face as Commander Video streams a rainbow behind him.

At $8, “Bit. Trip Runner” is retro fun and makes me feel like a kid again — which is priceless.

Review: Sin and Punishment: Star Successor on Wii – Video Games …

Depending on where you live in the world the first Sin and Punishment game on the Nintendo 64 may have passed you by. not because it got no marketing or lacked stock at launch, but because it probably was never released in your region (it was an Asia-exclusive). That did nothing but increase demand for the game, and is why the Virtual Console re-release has been so popular in the West.

What Sin and Punishment is an on-rails shooter and it is very hard. If you want a challenge then that is the game to get on VC. now in 2010 we have the sequel released on Wii without any such regional restrictions, more graphical power on offer, and a game that is just as challenging.

As with the first game, Sin and Punishment: Star Successor is an on-rails shooter. your character can move around the screen in the 2D plane, but never forwards or backwards into the scene. the game is fully 3D, however. Controls can be handled with either the Wii Remote and NunChuck or the Classic controller. I opted for the Classic Controller Pro as it suited the varied controls much better in my opinion, although many will prefer the comfort of the Wii Remote.

Your basic input consists of movement around the screen and a weapon button which fires your gun rapidly, swipes a sword with a quick tap, or unleashes an energy-sapping cannon shot. this is supplemented by a lock-on feature for enemies and an evade button which moves you quickly across the screen while temporarily invulnerable. the fact the game gives you the ability to be invulnerable for a few seconds as a standard control mechanism should hint as to how tough this is going to be.

Much like shooting games in the vein of Time Crisis and Virtua Cop, the player is transported automatically to a destination and then either defends a stationary position or moves automatically through an environment while fighting an onslaught of enemy units. the game follows a pattern of fighting general enemies, sub-bosses, and end-of-level multi-stage boss battles while being linked together with a thin veil of a story. Enemies vary from humanoids, flying creatures, vehicles, and gun turrets, to large snake-like creatures, mutating cape-wearing “humans”, and giant pulsating jellyfish-like water-based opponents.

The world looks great considering its on the Wii. Slowdown does occur when there is a boss character, lasers, bullets, missiles, and background enemies present, but it is never bad enough to really hinder gameplay.

A lot of thought has been put into the enemy design, and there is clearly an emphasis on opening the way for the player to score massive points bonuses by taking advantage of the background enemy presence. for example, you may be flying through the air concentrating your fire on a distant gun turret while overhead a flock of creatures pass by. Turning your gun on them will earn you a lot of extra points if you manage to evade the attention of the gun turret while doing so. this is true throughout with enemy units always present in the corner of the screen, or way off in the background firing weapons at you or just travelling from one place to another.

The boss encounters are quite varied and their forms often take up more than the whole screen. each has a weakness and/or pattern that must be mastered and then taken advantage of to win. To begin with this is easy, but gets progressively harder to fathom. when I say easy, I mean the pattern is easy to spot not the actual defeating of a particular enemy.

Initially the game seems harder than it is because you are getting used to the controls. you are required to think about movement, target reticule positioning, and evading all at the same time. in places the game becomes like a shmup bullet-hell title with multiple enemies firing weapons and the evade maneuver the only option while keeping your target reticule moving from enemy-to-enemy. for enemies with larger life bars the lock-on feature is not only useful, but required. Movement is constant and aiming is impossible without it. Challenges come not only in the form of bullet dodging, but evading the environment too. Enemies will roll barrels at you, make the walls fall down around you, or attempt to force you into a corner as a health-destroying machine appears. at times it is quite ruthless in its attempts to kill you.

The key point here is you don’t mind it being like that. Once you have mastered the controls this is a really fun experience that takes your complete concentration in order to master. Dying is just a side-effect of learning how to defeat a particular enemy, and your first playthrough will therefore be the toughest and lowest scoring. But the varied enemies, and thankfully unlimited continues, keep you coming back for more, as does the ability to upload your stage score online at the end of every level.

The mix of your gun as a ranged weapon and sword for melee at first seems a little pointless, but you soon learn to rely upon your sword as much as your gun. Enemies, especially bosses, will attack you from distance, but then all of a sudden dart up close in a bullet time moment. A switch to your sword at this point is vital to take their health down significantly as your weak gun fire has little effect for the rest of the time. the power shot of your gun is also put to good use and can either take out multiple enemies, or be used to break a boss who is protecting their weakest body area. you even have the option of batting back missiles at the enemies who fired them if you sword-swipe timing is fine-tuned.

If you want a really challenging shooter that shows the Wii hardware off well you can’t get much better than Sin and Punishment: Star Successor. at times you will want to throw the controller down in frustration, in particular when fighting a gun-toting girl in an environment where gravity direction seems to change every 5 seconds. But you won’t because the desire to beat your opponent doesn’t go away. It is never too frustrating not to continue on as my initial gaming session which lasted until 2am will attest.

This game is well worth a place in your library of Wii titles and I highly recommend it if you enjoy a challenge of this nature. as I mentioned before, I preferred playing this with the Classic Controller Pro, but it is a matter of preference and I urge you to try the motion controls too.
