dvd on wii?

ok so here is the question everyone has been asking:
can the wii play dvds or not?

the answer is: yes, but. and that is a big “but”.

the nintendo wii has everything inside of it that it needs to play dvd movies except for the “how to” part. all your wii game disks are dvds. so the wii has the right kind of laser and the right kind of hardware to read and process the information off of any dvd, including movies.

the “but” is that nintendo in all their wisdom, and you know i really am a huge fan of nintendo, has decided that even though your wii can easily play dvd movies you really don’t want it to, or need it to (which is probably true), so they have decided to leave out the little bit of coding that the wii would need to make dvd playback a reality.

“maybe it is too hard to do”, you say.
the fact is that dvd playback was a real possibility for all wii owners even just a few short months ago. our good friends at “team twiizers” had made dvd playback a reality with a little app called dvdx that was freely available via wii homebrew. so we know it can be done and we know that nintendo knows this as well.

as of october 23rd, 2008 most wii owners naively updated their consoles through nintendos prompting to wii system 3.4 which along with an update to the mii channel was nintendos attempt at trying to end homebrew for good. gladly wii homebrew and even the “twilight hack” lives on and is just as strong as ever before. unfortunately, the wii update has rendered it impossible (at the moment) for anyone with it to run the dvdx installer needed to get dvdx added to the homebrew channel.

this little video demonstrates what happens when you try to run the dvdx installer on a wii with system 3.4.

if you were lucky enough to have added the dvdx app before going to system 3.4 it should still work for you. now there are ways to downgrade your wii to the way it was before the october 23rd update but we can’t recommend that route since we have not tested it and there is always a chance that you might end up with a very nice white brick where your wii used to sit.

the good news is that if it was done once before it can and will happen again. someone will most likely take it upon themselves to find a way to get dvdx working on 3.4 and when they do we will all be ready to sing their praises. until then remember the dvd player there next to your wii is ready to help.
