Mahjongg Wii – Review

Mahjongg in its many different forms has been made and remade over and over again. Now you can play the classic tile matching game right on your TV screen. We have probably all seem and played Mahjongg on our computers but in case you haven’t here is the basic idea of the game.

You begin each game with a set of tiles which are all laid out in a complicated pattern. All you need to do is find the pairs of like tiles and select them which causes them to vanish and reveal the tiles that are underneath. The only real catch is that you can only select tiles that have at either one or both of their left or right sides free. Once you have cleared all the tiles the game is finished.

The Nintendo Wii Homebrew version of Mahjongg is everything that you would expect from the classic game and more. In Mahjongg Wii the system’s motion controls are utilized perfectly making the game very simple to use, you point with your Wiimote and click to select tiles. What makes Mahjongg Wii special is the brilliant two player mode. Adding a little bit of competition to a game that has been played as a form of solitaire for years is a surprisingly awesome improvement on the game. In the two player mode both players try and complete the same tile set at the same time. Scores are awarded for each match found and multipliers are awarded for each consecutive match that a player makes before the opposing player breaks their streak. To make it even more interesting is the added ability to steal tiles from your opponent. If a player selects a tile that their opponent had already selected the tile switches to that players color causing players to fight over tiles if they are both after the same pair.

Here is a video clip demonstrating Mahjongg Wii for the Homebrew Channel.
