Nintendo Wii System Update 3.5 – What’s Next?

What will Nintendo’s next firmware update offer us
and what affect will it have on Homebrew?

At this point Nintendo “could” do so many positive things in the next Wii system update that it would really be hard to guess which great improvement they will make. That is except for the painful reality that we have been disappointed so many times that no one in their right mind would dare get their hopes up again.

If Nintendo wanted to win back the support of fans everywhere and truly impress us they could give us any number of awesome updates. Here are just some of the very possible, yet totally unlikely updates that Nintendo could make in Wii system update 3.5.

Proper SD Card Support

I know that this one has been beat to death but deep inside we all are still longing for that elusive update that will actually give us the ability to load on and play WiiWare and Virtual Consoles from the Wii’s SD Card. We know the Wii “can” do this since all Homebrew apps run of the SD Card right now but will Nintendo finally throw us a bone? Eventually they will add proper SD Card support but in system 3.5, dare we hold our breath?

DVD Playback

I know, I know, I can already here the groans. “Who cares? We don’t need DVD playback on the Wii, anyhow we all have DVD Players.” Your absolutely right, but why Nintendo refuses to offer us a DVD Channel that could be purchased through the Shop Channel is beyond me. People who want to play DVD’s and are willing to pay good money to do so should be given the chance to throw their money away if they so desire. What is wrong with the world when people can not waste their money on pointless things if they want to do so?

Mario Kart Wii Chat Support

Racing and bad mouthing other racers as you blow them up and run them off the road. Cool right? This one is actually possible “if” Nintendo finally decides to loosing up on the whole Friend’s Code thing. Which they probably won’t do, they could, but they won’t.

So What Will We Get?

A more likely scenario is that Nintendo sends out another pointless update and another pathetic attempt to get rid of the one thing that we love most about the Wii, the Homebrew Channel. That is exactly what they did back in October 2008 with the Mii Channel update that everyone knows was really just an excuse to try and stop the Twilight Hack and end Homebrew once and for all. We can safely assume that if Nintendo does anything at all it will probably include trying to remove the DVD Playback, that homebrew has finally been able to give us back since the last update took it away, stopping the Twilight Hack, again, and they may even go so far as to remove Homebrew Channels from systems.

Whatever the case Wii system update 3.5 does not leave us breathless with anticipation that Nintendo will finally give Wii owners something new and truly exciting, no, we are breathless in fear that Nintendo will force 3.5 on us without our consent (which they can do by the way, read your User Agreement).
