wii homebrew emulators

for those that stumbled in here by mistake; emulation is the term used for programs and/or hacks that allow you play games from one console or platform on another console or platform. the idea here is that if you own, say a nintendo wii and would like to play sega genesis, sony playstation, or even super nintendo games, a emulator would allow your wii to run these games.

obviously your wii is not going to be equipped with a slot to insert genesis cartridges or any other consoles games (except the gamecube’s which already work in the wii) so the games from these other consoles need to be converted into files called roms and loaded via the sd slot.

legal?
emulation is no more illegal than owning a baseball bat. but if you use that baseball bat to hurt someone, that is illegal. the same is true for emulators; you can own them and use them as long as you don’t hurt anyone, or any company, in the process. if you install an emulator on your wii and play roms of games that you have legally purchased for another system than that is fine but if you download roms for games you don’t own and have no intention of buying then that is stealing and technically punishable by law.

roms?
you won’t find any here on wii homebrew review but a google search should prove helpful.

different console emulators available for the nintendo wii through homebrew:

fce ultra gx — nintendo entertainment system

genesis plus gx — sega genesis / megadrive

hugo-wii — turbo grafix 16 / pc engine

sms plus — sega master system / game gear

snes9x gx — super nintendo

wii64 — nintendo 64

wii engine — turbo grafix 16 / pc engine

yabause wii — sega saturn

emulation on the wii through homebrew is not limited to other consoles by any means, in fact emulators are also available for portable consoles including the nintendo gameboy, gameboy color, gamboy advance, and neo geo pocket as well as different pc’s and even arcade machines.

many of these emulators are available through the wii homebrew browser, which is by far the easiest way to add new homebrew to your system. once installed you just launch the emulator and tell it which rom to load (remember you will still need to find the right roms for your emulator).
