1. What is homebrew?
Homebrew is all that is good and right in the world, almost. Homebrew is the name given for video game hacks, apps (applications), and games that are coded (programed) by individuals who want to make video games or make video game consoles do stuff the manufacturers never intended but are not generally getting paid to do so. Most of the homebrew apps available are being worked on privately by one or two people and are being released in various versions as they work out problems and perfect their “babies”. Keep that in mind when you use an app that is flawed or glitchy, most are works in progress.
Homebrew apps can do tons of stuff:
- new original games
- ports of old games
- emulators of previous generation game consoles
- allow you to play games from outside your region
- allow the use of backed-up game disks
- demonstrate various features of your console
- provide applications that do all kinds of different things from sd card management, mii transferring, to providing you with a tv sized calculator
2. Is this illegal?
No! And yes if you want it to be. Ok, so here’s the deal: hacking your Wii and playing games or using apps that Nintendo has had nothing to do with is not illegal at all. Actually it is really none of Nintendo’s or anyone else’s business how you choose to use your Wii.
The line between legal and illegal gets crossed when you decide to use homebrew to help you steal games. Homebrew apps can make it possible for you to play games that are copied and burned onto DVD disks therefore making it possible for people to “share” video games. The fact is that if you didn’t legally pay for the game then it is stealing and stealing video games, movies, music, cars, kisses, whatever is illegal. International copyright laws make file sharing of video games illegal and punishable by large fines and potential prison sentences.
The other way people use homebrew to break the law is by using emulators to playing video game files (called roms) of which they do not own a legally purchased original copy. It is perfectly legal for you to own roms of games which you have purchased, these are simply viewed as backup copies that are for personal use.
Will you get caught? No idea….

3. Will it ruin my Wii?
We sure hope not but the fact is that “bricking” your console is always a possibility, but it is very rare. To “brick” your console is the term used to describe the worst case scenario which would be that your system dies and can not be recovered leaving you with a very handsome paperweight. (Nintendo customer service will not help you if you ruin your console with Wii homebrew). With that said it should be noted that most homebrew apps are testing over and over and over again to work out all the bugs and prevent things like this from ever happening. Homebrew is being used successfully by thousands of Wii owners.
(Another disclaimer: Wii homebrew exists for informational purposes only and does not suggest in any way that you personally should or should not add homebrew to your wii console. We simply test and review homebrew games and apps to let people who are already using homebrew know what works and what doesn’t.)
4. What is a Twilight Hack?
The twilight hack is the best and easiest way to add the homebrew channel to a Wii console. Adding homebrew by way of the twilight hack is a very simple process that requires only that you have a Wii, the Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess game, a sd card, and a computer with internet access.

5. Free? Are you sure?
Yup! That’s sort of the whole idea here. Wii homebrew is free. It is a true labor of love. Please, do not pay for homebrew. Websites are popping up all over the net that try and sell homebrew to Wii owners but why pay for something that is being given away for free. Most homebrew developers would accept a donation if you wanted to support them, but some are just as pleased to receive a kind email thanking them for all their hard work.
Homebrew installation guides are also available and these can be very helpful especially if you want to have all your homebrew questions answered in one spot. These guides can be safely purchased online and could save you a lot of time. Click here for an example of a site that offers a Wii homebrew guide.
6. Can you help me?
In short, no. At Wii Homebrew Review we review homebrew (see what I did there – snap) we don’t code, we don’t know how to help you. We are not trying to be jerks here or anything like that we just feel that you deserve real help and we are not it. The good news is that you are not the first person to need help getting into homebrew so there are a ton of great sites out there to help you and some of them are listed in our affiliates list.
